Some seasons we tweak the menu. This one we repainted the whole thing.
Pink boxes. Pink cups. Pink sauce. Pink slaw.
It was a hit. Phones came out before forks did.
The Barbie Chicken Burger anchored it, our fried breaded chicken under a pink garlic mayo we mixed specially for the run. The Barbie Slider brought two crispy chicken sliders with cheese and the same pink sauce. Barbie Chiki Fries went out buried under juicy chicken and more of it. Barbie Nuggets arrived with a pink dip on the side, and the Barbie Mojito finished the tray in a cup that matched everything else on it.
The detail people kept photographing wasn’t even the food. Open a nugget box and the inside of the lid read “Barbie Girl in Chiki World.” One line of pink text, printed where only the person eating would see it.
Nobody ordered quietly that season. Every table turned into a photo shoot.
Then the merch, which took on a life of its own. Stickers people actually collected and stuck on laptops and phone cases: a pink Corvette with the CHIKI logo on the bonnet, heart-shaped sunglasses, pink dice, a “Chiki Burger Club” ticket stamped no tomatoes, and a girl in an abaya holding a CHIKI bag. There were tote bags and a checkered varsity jacket too. We put Arabic through the artwork as well, because half the people ordering were saying باربي, not Barbie.
It stayed on longer than planned.
